What is Resistor – resistor types, working, uses?

We will know all about what a resistor is in very simple words, How the resistor is working and why the resistor is applied?.

What is a Resistor?

It is an electrical device, with the help of which we can control the current flow in the circuit. If we look at the definition of the resistor,

A resistor is an electronic device that reduces the speed of current flowing.

Resistor working

It is quite easy to understand this. If you are working in the electrical field only. Then we know that there are many things in which current cannot pass. For example, any wood or plastic.

But there are some curtains in which current flows very easily, such as copper, aluminum. Current passes through them easily, so we use them for wire.

Now we just have to remember this. The things through which current passes are called conductors. And the current which does not allow things to flow are called insulators.

Now we have come to know that conductor is a way for our current to flow. And if we spoil the path of this current, then it will be difficult for the current to pass due to which the speed of the current will decrease. So the same thing is done inside the resistor.

When the resistor is created. Then first of all take a conductor wire, which we also see coming out on both sides of the resistor. But this wire is broken from the middle. And the space in between is filled with carbon.

Due to the use of carbon in the resistor, it becomes difficult for the current to pass through, and the speed of the current decreases.

What is Resistance?

Many people also call resistor as resistance, so is it correct?

Meaning of Resistance- First of all you should know one thing that resistance is inside every object.

It is very important to understand this, inside any circuit, there is resistance to prevent current.

Now the question must have come to your mind that the resistor stops the current or is it resistance?

Answer- Resistor is the name of a device, like- mobile, TV, in this way resistor is also a device. But what stops the current inside it is resistance.

If you ever go to a shop to get a resistor, you will be asked how many resistance resistors are needed? Or how many Ohm of resistance is needed?

Meaning- Resistor is the name of a device, and resistance is the value inside it.

What is Ohm?

Ohm is SI unit of resistance. As I told you that we put carbon in the middle of the conductor, and it becomes a resistor.

But, how much current we have to reduce, according to that carbon is inserted. As there is a place, we have to reduce the amount of current there, so we will use less carbon in the resistor, which means we will put a resistor of low resistance.

Just as we speak the weight in Kg we measure resistor in ohms. If we want to reduce more current in the circuit, then we will put a resistor of more ohm.

Difference between Resistance and Ohm – Both of these are the same thing, just we write the value of resistance in Ohm (Ω).

Why Resistors are used?

All our electrical or electronic equipment has a strength, that it can bear the maximum amount of current. If more current goes into it than the power of that device, then it will be completely damaged.

Example- We have an LED bulb, and we have to start it. For this, first of all, we will check on that device how much current and voltage it is made for.

Now if we have a battery more than the capacity of the LED, we will use a resistor in the middle to stop the extra current coming out of the battery, and our LED will run smoothly.

Resistor Definition- resistor is an electrical component. That limits or regulates the flow of electrical current in an electronic circuit.

Resistor Types

There are two types of resistor.

  1. Fix resistor

  2. Variable Resistor

Fix Resistors- In this type of resistor, we cannot increase or decrease the value of resistance.

Variable Resistor- In this type of resistor, we can increase or decrease the value of resistance as per the requirement.

How to know the value of the resistor?

We have two ways for this.

  1. With the help of a multimeter.

  2. With the help of the color code made on the resistor.

It is quite easy to find the value of resistance from a multimeter, all you have to do is set the multi-meter to Ohm(Ω). And the leads of both the multimeter have to be connected to the resistor.

How to know the value of the resistor?

In another way, we can find out the value with the help of the color on the resistor. Color code in resistors: Resistance manufacturers on the color method to determine the value of resistance.

The following table shows how to read the resistors and the value of each color.
