What is a multimeter? How to use a multimeter?
What is a multimeter? What is Digital Multimeter? What is an analog multimeter? How is a digital multimeter used?
You will get the answer to all these questions in this article of this Digital Multimeter.
The British engineer named Donald Mecadia invented the multimeter. Around the 1920s, he created a meter that could measure volts, amperes, and resistance. It was earlier called Avometer, in due course of time, it was upgraded which we know as a multimeter.
What is the use of an Avometer?
A multimeter is also known as an Avometer is a tester used to measure electrical voltage, current, resistance, and other parameters. Multimeters are used for measuring and fault detection in electrical circuits.
What is Multimeter?
People associated with the electrical, instrument, electronic subjects cannot move forward without a multimeter.
There are many parameters in a technical subject. What is the value of parameters like AC – DC voltage, AC - DC current, resistance, frequency in the circuit? It is important to know this.
Along with this, it is also important to know the healthiness of the components used in the circuit. There are many components used in electronic circuits like resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, and Fuse.
Using Digital Multimeter we can check all the parameters and components. The voltage is measured with a voltmeter. Current is measured with an Ampere meter. The resistance of the resistor is measured by ohm (Ω) meter.
There are separate meters to measure all these parameters and to check components.
If you understand Multimeter, One that can measure more than one parameter is a multimeter.
Definition of Multimeter
A multimeter is an electronic device composed of an electronic circuit. There are two leads with this. It helps to measures the parameters like voltage, current, ampere of the circuit and also helps to find the problem by checking the components of the circuit.
Types of Multimeter
There are two types of the multimeter. One analog and one digital, we understand this in detail.
Analog Multimeter – What is Analog Multimeter?

Analog multimeters have a pointer. The range of each parameter is written on the display. When we measure a parameter, the pointer moves towards the display. And gets stuck at the place of value. Which tells us how much value it is.
The meter in which we get the value of voltage, current, resistance, etc. from the pointer, is called an analog multimeter.
Nowadays analog multimeter is rarely used. It does not get reading with the accurate point. Nowadays mostly only Digital Multimeter is used.

This is a meter made of modern technology. In this, the value of the parameter is in different ranges. We can make a selection according to our needs.
The electronic meter from which we get the value of voltage, current, resistance, etc. with perfect digits on the display is called a Digital multimeter.
In today's time, all those who do electrical and electronics-related work, almost all of them use Digital Multimeter.
In Digital Multimeter we get the value of any parameter accurately. This type of meter has a display. Where we see the value of the parameter in numbers. There is a movable selector switch and there are two leads red(positive) and black(negative).
The reliability of the Digital Multimeter meter is high and this meter is better than an analog multimeter.
How To Use Digital Multimeter – How To Use Multimeter?
How to check diode working or not using multimeter?
Multimeter looks complicated. But it is very easy to use. Here we will understand how to use a multimeter.
Understand how to measure the main parameters measured using a multimeter.
There is a selector switch in the multimeter, which has to be rotated towards the parameter whose value you want to know.
Example If you want to know the AC voltage, then keep the selector nob on the AC voltage, if you want to know the resistance then keep it on Ohm (Ω).
How to check the voltage with a multimeter?
1 – The multimeters can measure both AC and DC voltage.
2 – If we have to measure the voltage, then the selector nob switch has to be selected on that icon labeled on the multimeter.
3- There is also a different range of voltage to select in the multimeter. In this, we have to select the range above the value we have.
Example If we want to measure 220, then we should keep it at 600 volts on the multimeter.
4- Multimeter has two leads. One black and one red, connect the black to the bottom plug and the red to the top.
5 – Now we have to touch the red lead with the positive and the black lead with the negative of the circuit for which we want to measure the voltage. Check the voltage in parallel in the circuit.
6 – The value of the voltage on the multimeter will appear.

How To Check Resistance With Multimeter? – Resistance
The resistance of a circuit, the resistance of the resistor, and the resistance of equipment such as motor transformers are measured.
1 – Select the selector switch at Ohm (Ω) on the multimeter.
2- After selecting the range, change it if needed if the resistor value is higher than selected.
3 - Connect both the leads with the coil or circuit whose resistance is to be checked.
4 – The value of resistance will be shown in the display of the multimeter.
You can see the picture of the Digital Multimeter below. All the parameters are marked in it. We can see here what is the symbol for which parameter in the multimeter.
How to Check Ampere with Multimeter?
Ampere meter is always connected in series in the circuit. Here the connection of the circuit should be such that we can do a series connection. Touching both the leads of the multimeter circuit in series will show the value of the ampere.
A very small amount of ampere is measured with a multimeter. The range of amperes in a multimeter is only up to 10 amperes. And special care is taken to measure it. If a lead is connected in the wrong place, the meter may be damaged.
Usually, a clip-on meter is used to measure amperes. A Clip-on meter is designed to measure current. It also has a more ampere range. That's why a clip-on meter is the best for measuring amperes.
The multimeter is also Use as a Continuity tester- How to check Continuity using a multimeter?
The most common use of a multimeter is as a continuity tester. Continuity can solve many problems.

Components use to check using a continuity tester.
The diode can be checked.
You can check the transistor.
You can check the winding of the coil of any device (Transformer).
You can check the wire or cable.
You can check whether a switch or breaker is closed, or open.
To check continuity with a multimeter, keep the selector switch on continuity mode. The meter leads are to be connected at both ends of the instrument. The meter will show zero on the display and an alarm will sound to let us know if it is short or open.
If if you hear a beep sound alarm then the two points are short and connected.
If if you don't hear a beep sound alarm then the two points are open and are not connected.
Working of Digital Multimeter
Digital Multimeter is operated from the battery. We have to know the value of any parameter to the multimeter, then first it converts into DC voltage. For example, when we measure voltage, current, frequency, or resistance, it is first converted into DC voltage. After this, through the converter, it shows its value on the display.
The multimeter has a microcontroller and a microprocessor as well as a digital control block. It works to restrict information according to need.
Digital Multimeter works in a way similar to Digital Voltmeter, Digital Ampere Meter, and Digital Ohm Meter.
Where is a multimeter used?
All the people are related to electronics and electrical use multimeter.
Generally use in electronics repair shops like Mobile, TV repair shop, electrical equipment repairers. It is used in the electrical and instrument department in industries for checking faults.
The benefit of Multimeter- What are the benefits of using Multimeter?
1 – There is no need for many different meters to measure electrical parameters all the parameters can be measured only with a multimeter.
2 - It is cheaper.
3 - User Friendly.
4- The multimeter is light in weight, so it can be carried anywhere.
5 – A student, shopkeeper, technician, and engineer all people can use it.
