Circuit breaker and Isolator difference

Circuit breaker and Isolator difference

What is a circuit breaker and isolator?

Today I will tell you what is Isolator and circuit breaker, and what is the difference between these two. And with this, if you have ever heard the name of the Onload device and Offload device, then you will also get information related to it today.

Isolator

What are Circuit Breaker and Isolator?

The circuit breaker and isolator both are used for switching electrical equipment. Meaning, with the help of both of these, we can open and close the electrical circuit supply.

Apart from this, if you know that the isolator itself is called the off-loading device, and the circuit breaker is called the on-load device.

The isolator is called an offload device because we can use it only in a closed circuit.

Meaning- With the help of an Isolator, we can never turn off any device in running condition. If you ever read the safety of the isolator, then it is written in it as well that the use of the isolator should not be done in the current load.

Whereas nothing like this happens in the circuit breaker. The MCB installed in our house is also a circuit breaker. We can also use the circuit breaker in the condition of running load.

So for this reason, the circuit breaker is called an on-load device, because we can use it in the current load. Whereas Isolator is an offload device. We can use it only when our equipment is off.

The isolator is an off-loading device whereas Circuit Breaker is an on-load device.

The isolator can be used only in a manual way, which means if we want to turn off the supply from the isolator, then we have to go to it.

Whereas circuit breakers can be used in both automatic and manual modes.

Examples of the circuit breaker are MCB, MCCB, ACB, etc., while the G.O. -Gang Operated Switch is installed in our substation inside the isolator.

The main job of the isolator is to isolate our equipment and electrical supply from each other. Whereas the main function of the circuit breaker is to protect our equipment from any electrical fault.

The isolator never opens automatically when there is any fault in electrical. Whereas the circuit breaker at this time automatically trips and protects our equipment.

The isolator is a mechanical switch, it does not provide any kind of protection to the electrical equipment. Whereas circuit breaker is an electrical switch, and it protects the equipment at the time of the fault.

The cost of Circuit Breaker is much higher than that of Isolator.

So I hope you have got answers to many questions related to your Isolator and Circuit breaker.
